The next one to be in the first part of 2012.

Panda is meant to weed out of the SERPs questionable and low value sites and pages. Among these are sites referred to as link farms. Because link farms have lots (ie bazillions) of links, and because it is, relatively speaking, too costly for them to adequately maintain all those links, a site with lots of broken links MIGHT be worthy of the wrath of the Panda. (good explanation of Panda)

“Check all links and make sure that the URLs still exist. If you find some that are no longer working, fix them or remove the links so that Google will not think that you are intentionally trying to abuse the search algorithm. Broken links give Google the impression you’re just a link farm.” Search Engine News article

I’m not sure what the official number is for “lots of links”, but suffice it to say it’s probably something larger than dozens. Our typical client doesn’t have thousands of links (though there have been a few). They don’t even have hundreds of pages. Setting aside the risk of a Google smack down, we consider it best practice to keep an eye out for broken links and their ilk, and to fix them promptly. Seems that most legitimate SEO types agree.

Broken links are simply links that aren’t working anymore (you can quote me on that). The broken link might be the result of something as simple as a typo, but most often it means the link is pointing to a page that no longer exists (i.e. 404 errors). This wikipedia article refers to it as link rot. Who wants a bad case of link rot? (Got a cream for that?)

Looking for link rot issues is a standard part of most SEO audits. We do it using tools like Screaming Frog and SEOMOZ crawl test to find problems (not affiliate links). Additionally, we monitor Google and Bing Webmaster Tools for our clients on a continuous basis. This seems to be standard operating procedure for most SEO’s, small and large.

Here’s where I’d like to pick a fight with a valued partner: the webmaster. By webmaster I simply mean the person or agency who’s been hired to build and/or maintain a client website. As someone who’s relatively new to the industry I don’t get why developers/designers/webmasters don’t monitor and maintain this critical aspect of website health. It seems to me this should be a regular action item for them. Isn’t this simply due diligence?

It’s time you website professionals up your game. Don’t wait for the SEO guys (or gals) to find the problems. We don’t want to make you look bad, but we can’t ignore the problem. We have to bring it up to a client. It’s like having a house built and then finding the construction guys swept all their trash into a closet in the basement or left a bunch of broken pipes and unnecessary wiring in the walls.

Granted, their are some developers and webmasters out there who are on the ball and getting it done. And I will acknowledge that many website owners simply don’t pay for this ongoing service. Please add this to your job description. Let the client know this is one of many numerous reasons why they need to pay you a monthly retainer. We’ll help you sell it!

I love developers. Some of my best friends are developers, well, I have some developers who are friends (not the least of which is my brother). I’m not hating on you. I certainly don’t want to do what you do, so I need you. And I want you to do good work. Anything worth doing is…. You have permission to remind me I said that.

Posted by Aaron Wheeler

If you're reading this blog, congratulations! You are a customer of SEOmoz. I've probably personally spoken to at least a few of you, and provided help and support to many more of you. Have you ever wondered how SEOmoz supports 15,000 PRO members and over 250,000 free members and blog readers? After all, Roger can't personally answer every email we receive here. He's not Santa Claus! Instead, the six mozzers that make up the Help Team answer all of the emails, phone calls, and chat requests we get every day. I want to tell you a little bit more about them and give you a look at the way we've built the SEOmoz support channels to meet our overall goal: to provide the best customer service on the planet. It's a hard goal to reach, but I can't think of any more worthwhile endeavor.

 The Help Teamsters

 Crissy Hall

Crissy is old school! She came to SEOmoz in the spring of 2010. Back then, the Help Team was just Sarah Bird (our COO) and Crissy, and I joined soon after. She loves the fact that she’s been able to watch our team and SEOmoz grow since she started. Things are always changing with our site and tools, and as she says, it keeps us on our toes! Her favorite part of working at SEOmoz is the balance between fun and productivity that makes our team and company such an amazing place to work. Crissy spends her time helping users with their tool and billing questions, planning kick-ass Help Team outings (we made terrariums together last month), and helping the Marketing & Ops teams keep track of our weekly membership reporting.

When she’s not in the office, Crissy likes to take her son Sam on adventures around Seattle. She likes to sew up a storm, particularly to make clothes for her toddler (instant gratification, according to her). In the "warmer" Seattle months she rides her bicycle, named "Tom Selleck," to work and back.

 Megan Singley

Megan's been a help teamster for a little over a year now and loves connecting with our users. With several years of experience in customer service, she really strives to make every interaction with SEOmoz users a positive one. Besides responding to emails, calls, and chats, Megan plans and organizes our weekly software demos and investigates billing issues to keep any possible fraudsters at bay. She's also been known to do some writing, whether it be on the SEOmoz blog or in product messages throughout the site.

When not at the MozPlex, Megan likes to watch The Daily Show and Battlestar Galactica with her cat, Lily, and her awesomely-cool-fun-amazing neighbor across the hall, me! (Those are her words of course.) She also enjoys reading anything she can get her hands on (lately, it's been The Hunger Games series) and even started a library for the office. On weekends, she hangs out with friends (including lots of fellow Mozzers), goes dancing to anything from funk & soul to 90's hip hop, and cooks as much as possible.

 Kenny Martin

Kenny joined up last year and is one of our few Washington natives! He grew up in a small, sleepy Northwestern town, thus is afraid of the sun. He compensates for a lack of natural energy sources by drinking copious amounts of black coffee. Kenny spends most of his time pursuing the TAGFEE dream by diagnosing tough technical issues, getting his hands dirty with a little web design, and filming each week's Whiteboard Friday.

He never wanders off too far away from his MacBook and for this reason alone his girlfriend mistakenly thinks he loves it more than her. It's probably because most of his spare time is spent designing websites or leaning about some fantastic new technology on the internet. He also loves the Daily Show, puppies, pizza, and tacos.

 Nick Sayers

Nick joined our team in September last year and got up to speed lickety-split! Like the rest of our team mates, he answers customer emails, phone calls, and live chat questions. Nick has also spear-headed our new help documentation project that gives customers the resources learn anything about SEOmoz's tool set. This effort makes our company more scalable by answering customers' questions before they call, write, or chat with us, which gives them more instant gratification, as well. Needless to say, he spends a lot of his time creating screencasts and typing up FAQs. Nick has a passion for educating and helping others, so is constantly looking for new resources to show SEOmoz's customers.

Nick enjoys film, video games, reading, and cooking. He is an avid reader of anything from Eastern Philosophy to some of the nerdiest sci-fi/fantasy novels ever written. When not at work, Nick is usually spending time with his wife and partner in crime, Becky. On most nights, they cook new recipes together, play an unhealthy amount of Left 4 Dead 2 or Skyrim, and watch movies. On the weekends, Nick and Becky explore Washington and go to retro theaters. Nick is also involved in independent film-making and has produced, written, and directed a feature film and many shorts. On the sci-fi geek front, Nick has a huge collection of memorabilia from the Alien(s) films. He also has a cat named Ash after Bruce Campbell's character in the Evil Dead series. Of course, this means Nick calls her Evil Ash when she is bad.

 Chiaryn Miranda

Chiaryn is the newest addition to the team, having been here for about two months. Don't let that fool you though: she's caught up real quick-like! She's been doing customer service for a long time and is working on learning new things about SEO every day. What better place to learn, eh?

When she's not in the office, she likes to make art and take photographs. She's been working on a sketchbook that will be going on a national tour. She also likes to take trips around the beautiful Seattle waterfront with her camera. When she can, she tries to take candid portraits. Check out some of her artwork on her Art House Co-Op page. She's also an avid movie fan, with a particular love of horror movies, and reads as much as possible. In her words, she'll gobble up pretty much any nonfiction book you put in front of her. That's why we call her Turkey Miranda! Just kidding – that's not why we call her that.

 Aaron Wheeler

If you've made it this far, you've probably figured out that this is me! I started at SEOmoz in the summer of 2010 and am loving every minute of being here. A couple months ago I became the manager of the Help Team, which means I do what I can to support the lovely members of our team, and provide our customers with the best service on the planet. It's a tough goal – we have very discerning customers – but a goal I think we can eventually fulfill. Some background: I studied sociology and cognitive science at UC San Diego, but starting doing SEO after graduating. Turns out that ranking for attorneys in San Diego is tough work! I left San Diego early 2010 for Seattle, and eventually found my way at SEOmoz.

Besides working at a place I love, I enjoy reading (currently Steve Jobs), watching great shows (currently my third run of Deadwood), and seeing my favorite bands in Seattle's historical music venues (this month: Junip, Nada Surf, and The Asteroids Galaxy Tour). I also enjoy trying out vegan recipes with my girlfriend, Holly Haymaker, who has the coolest name in the world and a whimsical interactive e-cards site, to boot!

 What Do We Do?

You know how, sometimes, you have a question about our site and tools? Or about your account or payment? We're the people you call, email, live chat, and post to our help forums for. Unlike huge companies with call centers and many tiers of support and different people doing phones and chats, though, everyone on our team does everything. It's a great way to keep everyone fully informed about site issues and keep our support fresh and agile. That's not all we do, though! Let me show you all of the ways we keep our customers happy:

Email: Using a Robust Ticketing System

When you send an email to help@seomoz.org, it gets forwarded to our ticketing system. We use ZenDesk, the same help desk software used by companies like Groupon and Box.com. ZenDesk allows us to manage customer emails, assign them to specific people, and easily share them with engineering and product so we can get answers to questions quickly! This is important because we receive over 2,000 emails a month: way too many to respond to from a single email address effectively.

 How Does It Work?

When we receive an email, the sender gets an email back with a ticket number. As you see, it gets added to our queue of tickets to reply to. We try to answer 80% of tickets within 8 hours, but if it's a situation where someone has a billing problem or can't access their account (lost password, etc.), we try to answer even faster than that. Our goal is for each member of the Help Team to answer 20 tickets per day. If we don't have the knowledge to answer a question, we'll send the ticket to our engineers and product managers to get an answer. If it's a bug, we let the customer know and open a bug fix with our Triage team. They assign the bug to an engineer, who fixes it and lets them know. Triage sends it back to us when it's fixed, and we email the customer and close the ticket.

When we close a ticket, we send a one-question survey through SurveyMonkey asking how happy we made a customer with our customer service. We try to make 90% of our customers happy, and 30% of our customers delighted. Sometimes, though, we fail to satisfy a customer. When this happens, we ask for the customer's email address and ticket number so we can get in touch and make it right. I've found that when a customer has had a bad experience, reaching out to them to make it right almost always turns the situation around.

 Phones: Not a Phone Bank

We get a relatively small amount of calls at SEOmoz: about 100 to 150 a week. Makes sense, as most SEOs do their research online. =) We don't have a sales team and don't do phone marketing, so the only employees that really have phones here are in Operations or the Help Team. We get a lot of calls from potential customers asking about what we do, though we do get a few from PRO members, too. Here's a chart with our phone stats for last week:

 How Does it Work?

When a person calls in to SEOmoz, they usually start out talking to Hillari, our fantastic office manager. She makes sure they're not a spambot and, when they're a lovely customer, transfers them to the Help Team pool. The first available person picks it up and starts helping! Pretty straightforward process, as you telephone users know. After the call is over, we try to create a ticket and follow up with the customer to make sure they had all their questions answered. If it's an SEO question, we refer them to the Q&A or to our list of recommended SEO consultants.

Live Chat: What You Need, When You Need It

When potential customers are browsing our software sales pages, they often have questions they want answered now. Same thing goes for existing customers with questions about a payment or their account status: these are the kinds of questions people want to know the answers to quickly. Live Chat comes to the rescue! Instead of requiring a customer to call or send in an email, we usually keep someone logged into Live Chat throughout the day so customers can get help immediately. This leads to happier customers and cuts down on our ticket and phone levels. We use the awesome chat widget SnapEngage, and installed it to a few choice pages.

 How Does it Work?

Kenny coordinated with SnapEngage to create a custom view of the widget. When you click "Chat Now," it pops up a dialog box that displays three FAQs, and has a field for the email address of the customer and the question they have. When they've typed those in, all they have to do is click "Message" to open a ticket, or "Live Chat" to start talking! Interesting point: we didn't always have those three FAQs. Adding them reduced chats about these topics about 90%. Yay for preemptive answers!

After we finish chatting with a customer, the chat transcript is automatically added to ZenDesk as a ticket, where we can save it for future review and for long-term tracking. We can also follow up with a customer there. If we're offline, or if a customer chooses the "Message" option instead of the "Live Chat" option, it creates a ticket from the get-go instead.

We can also track the types of computers and browsers people are using when they chat with us, which helps us diagnose the issue faster and get an idea of what our average customer needing immediate support looks like. The chart to the left is a look at last month's chatters.

Forums & Documentation: Help More People More Quickly

We maintain both our customer service and API forums through the SEOmoz help desk. We've also started adding all of our tool documentation, videos, and walkthroughs here to make them all available in the same place. This makes our Help Desk a one-stop shop for looking at frequently asked questions, checking out known issues with the site or tools, and just generally getting more knowledgeable about how to use a PRO subscription to its fullest. It's also where we ask customers to submit feature requests.

 How Does it Work?

When a customer has a question, they can go to our Help Desk and do a search for the answer, or browse existing questions and documentation. Many of the forums are straight-up questions and answers, but a lot of them are longer-form pages that are part of our documentation project. We want to document the bejewels out of our tools! Yes, there will always be questions from customers, but the more information you can put in their hands early on, the more happy they'll be, and the more scalable our service becomes.

One cool feature: the Feature Request Forum has a voting system so customers can vote on the features they want to see most. Our product team reviews this feedback to get an idea of what to prioritize and what to put further down the roadmap. It's a great way to get customers more involved in SEOmoz's future!

This, That & The Other: Events, Office Tours, Webinars, Demos, Cookies…

We do a bunch of other stuff to help our customers, and it's hard to get it all down in words! We give weekly software demos to help new customers get the most out of PRO,

Whether you’re just starting out with email marketing or you already have some experience sending marketing emails, you’ve probably wondered about the types of email communication you can send to your database.

Should you nurture your subscribers with weekly newsletters? Are dedicated sends better at optimizing your sales and marketing funnel? What about email digests? These are all valid questions that marketing professionals should consider when selecting the right format to meet their email marketing goals.

So which types of emails should you be sending? In this blog post, we’ll discuss the different types of email marketing communication and their respective advantages and disadvantages. This information should help you make both an educated decision when choosing the most appropriate email format to meet your specific goals.

When deciding whether you should use email newsletters in your marketing strategy, you first need to determine your goal. What is it that you want your email newsletter to achieve? You might want to nurture your existing contacts and become the first brand they think of when they need a product or service in your industry. Or your goal might be to increase social sharing so you attract new people to your list. As you define your goal, think about what metrics you can use to track your progress.

Email newsletters are characterized by three key advantages. First, they can spread your brand awareness. By building habitual communication with your email subscribers, you enable them to recognize your brand and associate it with a positive sentiment. Second, email newsletters can leverage existing content. Many companies do quick summaries of their most popular blog posts and link to the articles from their newsletter. Third, email newsletters give you the freedom to include different types of content that might be important to your organization. For instance, the same newsletter can contain a popular blog post, a new offer, an announcement of an upcoming event, information about a discount, and a link to a survey.

Email newsletters are also characterized by some important disadvantages. First, they dilute the main call-to-action. If you include a series of blurbs or article summaries, the attention of your recipients will most likely be spread across these tidbits of information as opposed to staying focused on a certain element. Second, the design of a newsletter becomes a much more complicated task than other emails like dedicated sends. You’ll have to spend some time deciding on the right placement of images and text, alignment, and prioritization of information.

Similar to newsletters, email digests provide summaries of existing information and offer a snapshot of a specific time frame (e.g. a week or a month). Traditionally, digests highlight the most popular pieces of content that new readers will gravitate toward, such as digests of books, movies, etc.

Digests are generally easier to consume than newsletters because they generally consist of links and lists. One popular option is the blog digest, which collects notifications about the articles you publish throughout a certain time frame and releases an email with the links. If you are blogging using HubSpot’s platform, your subscribers have the opportunity to set up this type of digest based on their preferences.

Dedicated emails, also known as stand-alone emails, contain information about just one offer. For instance, you can use a dedicated email to notify your target audience about a new whitepaper you’ve released or invite them to attend an event that you’re hosting.

Dedicated email sends have three main advantages. First, they help you set up the context to introduce a main call-to-action and really drive results in respect to that one offer. Second, they are easy to build. Once you have your email template in place, building dedicated sends should be easy. Unlike newsletters, dedicated emails don’t need to include many graphical elements to separate the different blocks of text and prioritize information. Third, they are easy to measure. When you promote one main message and call-to-action, it will be easy for you to track progress, such as click-through rate, conversion rate, and leads generated from the individual send.

Dedicated email sends also have some disadvantages. First, with dedicated sends, the emailing schedule is less clear and potentially less consistent. You might use dedicated emails when you have published a new offer (which might be sporadic). Even if you decide to maintain a specific schedule, your subscribers might not realize it or expect communication from you because there is no clear connection between the separate sends. Second, it’s tough to include diverse content in a dedicated send, so you cannot add other calls-to-action that might also be important to your organization.

Lead nurturing introduces a tightly connected series of emails full of useful content with a coherent purpose. In this context, lead nurturing offers more advantages than just an individual email blast.

Let’s look at some of the specific advantages of lead nurturing. First, it’s timely. Studies show that email response rates decline over the lead age, so you need to reach out to your contacts while they are fresh and actively engaged with your brand. Second, it’s automated. Once you set up lead nurturing, emails are sent out automatically according to the schedule you’ve set as new leads come in. This leads to a high return on a low investment. Third, it is targeted. According to HubSpot’s research, lead nurturing emails generate an 8% CTR compared to general email sends, which generate just a 3% CTR. In other words, targeted and segmented emails perform better than mass email communications.

Lead nurturing also has some disadvantages that you should keep in mind. First, it results in less congruent buzz. Dedicated sends to your entire email database can generate a lot of buzz around your brand. Lead nurturing cannot quite achieve the same buzz effect because it is programmed to schedule fewer emails to segmented audiences. Second, it’s inviting to passive tracking. Because lead nurturing is automated and marketers often forget about it after they’ve set it up, it also tends to be under-reported.

If you want to reach a totally new audience and generate net new leads, you might want to try sponsorship emails. In sponsorship emails, you pay for inclusion of your copy in another vendor’s newsletter or dedicated send.

The biggest advantage of sponsorship emails is that they are highly targeted, enabling you to be specific in defining the segment you want to reach. This allows you to get granular in identifying the different characteristics of your target audience–number of employees, geographic location, their interests and challenges, etc. Another advantage of sponsorship emails is that their ROI is very easy to determine. Because you already know how much you are paying the vendor, you only need to track the results you’re generating (visits, leads, sales) in order to determine what is the return on the cost you have paid.

Of course, it’s a disadvantage that you have to pay for sponsorship emails. Vendors usually offer different payment packages, and this is where you enter the land of negotiation. The other big disadvantage of sponsorship emails is that their management requires a major marketing effort and tight control. “For this style of sponsorship to be successful, there needs to be a dedicated team behind it that understands data, brand synergies, and the ability to unearth unseen co-branding opportunities,” writes Jackie Fast, managing director at Slingshot Sponsorship.

Transactional emails are the messages that get triggered by a specific action your contacts have taken, enabling them to complete that action. For instance, if you are signing up for a webinar, you will fill out a form and then receive a transactional (thank-you) email that provides you with the login information in order to join. Transactional emails are also the messages you receive from ecommerce sites like Amazon that confirm your order and give you shipment information and other details.

The biggest advantage of transactional emails is that they enjoy a high click-through rate (CTR). Recipients open these communications and click on them. Take advantage of this dynamic, and include a highly customized call-to-action (maybe even as a p.s.) to leverage the fact that the subscriber is fresh and very actively engaged with your email communication.

Unfortunately, one disadvantage of transactional emails is that they can add a barrier to entry. Sometimes the idea of taking yet another step to complete an action discourages recipients from completing the action altogether.

With all the types of email communication at a marketer’s disposal, it’s easy to fall into the trap of sending your email recipients too much email. Therefore, it’s very important to regularly keep track of what messages you’re sending to who. That being said, it’s entirely possible to send all of these types of emails without spamming your list, and that’s where segmentation comes into play. A highly productive and effective email marketing campaign consists of segmented communication that touches prospects and leads at the right time with the right type of email to suit that recipient’s needs and preferences.

Penelope Trunk, true to her ?Brazen Careerist? brand, wrote an assertive ? and annoying ? guest post this week on TechCrunch called ?Stop Telling Women to Do Startups.? It starts with a sentence that isn?t even grammatically correct:

We need to get more guys who are running tech startups instead decide to be stay-at-home dads.

She goes on to say that of course this statement sounds ?stupid? ? just as stupid as the reverse, or saying that more women should do startups instead of being stay-at-home moms. There are plenty of opportunities for women in startups, she claims ? but women don?t want them, because women want babies.

As far as I can tell, her only evidence for the claim that women don?t want to do startups is that not many women do startups. Trunk is assuming that women can do whatever they want ? but it?s not at all clear that that?s the case. Last time I checked, there?s still a wage gap ? women in America are paid only 80% of what men are paid. I don?t take this to mean that women want to be paid less.

Laura Klein of the blog ?Users Know? responded to Trunk?s article by saying ?STFU about what women want?:

I?m not going to argue that most women don?t want to stay home with their children. Frankly, I don?t care what most women want to do.

I know what I want to do, and what I want to do is to work at startups. I don?t want to have children. I?ve never wanted children. I never will want children, and I certainly wouldn?t want to give up working at startups for them.

So, when a publication like TechCrunch spews some nonsense about what women want, it means that the next time I go into an interview with a male founder (and they are overwhelmingly male for some reason that I?m not going to address here, but that Penelope assures us has nothing to do with bias) who has read that nonsense, he may be thinking, consciously or subconsciously, ?she doesn?t really want to work at this startup because she wants to have a baby.?

And frankly, that sucks for me and all the other women like me. Oh, did I mention that there are lots of other women like me? There are.

To me, Klein?s point is that telling women not to do startups is much more dangerous than telling them to do them. If women can do what they want (as Trunk claims), then career-oriented encouragement won?t harm them ? they?ll just ignore it. But given, well, the history of the world, it seems much more likely that at least some women do need encouragement in this arena.

They may have been told, straight out, by a parent or teacher that they don?t belong in math or the sciences or the tech industry, because those are male-dominated fields for a reason. Or they may simply assume they don?t belong in those fields, because they don?t know any women who work in them. They may have been subtly guided away from those fields their entire lives, starting with the kinds of toys and games they were given as children ? a doll, not a toolset or Lincoln Logs. They may actually need to be told or reminded ? hey, if you?re a woman and you?re interested in tech and you?re ambitious, you?re not crazy or wrong or weird. But people may think you?re crazy or wrong or weird, so you may just have to work a little harder.

Klein points out that her father?s law school class in 1963 had three women in it, and probably ?there were all sorts of blowhards opining that women didn?t go to law school because they were too busy having babies.? Now more than 50% of law school graduates are women. We could see the same thing happen in startups in the next 40 years ? if we create opportunities for women. If we don?t ram it down their throats that what they?re supposed to want is babies, not a company.
